💰 How The Sunk Cost Bias Prevents Customer Churn
Have you heard of the sunk cost bias?
Customers who feel they’ve already invested time, effort, or money into a product or service are more likely to stick with it.
So use this psychological trick to your advantage on your ecommerce site!
Here are some small tweaks you can make today to prevent customers from abandoning their carts and retain them long-term.
1️⃣ Add a progress bar to checkout.
When customers can see how they’ve made progress during the online shopping process, they feel more obligated to complete their purchase.
👉 You can also apply a similar visual cue to your customer feedback forms to increase their completion rate.
2️⃣ Extend a free trial. If you run a service-based business, offering a free trial is a great way to attract customers and keep them in a recurring subscription model.
Once the free trial is done, customers feel obligated to continue rather than cancel.
3️⃣ Offer subscription-based products. Businesses like Nespresso don’t make money off of selling coffee machines but by getting you to purchase coffee pods as add-ons.
Since customers have already invested in a pricey coffee maker, they are more willing to shell out for pods which seem like a small amount in comparison.
4️⃣ Send a reminder email to your VIP customers about their loyalty points and urge them to redeem them.
Motivate them to claim an incentive or spend just a bit more to reach the next tier since they are only ‘x’ points away.
The takeaway?
Reminding customers how much time and money they’ve already invested in your brand will make them feel more compelled to stay and shop again.
✨ Generate A Custom Shopify Theme Using AI
Shopify merchants can now set up and design a store using AI.
Business owners can describe their business using text prompts, and AI will create a custom theme based on their requirements.
Shopify President Harley Finkelstein shares that with this new feature, “it makes the barrier to launch a business even lower.”
